Our History
Created in 1978 by a group of committed parents, the Boys, Girls, Adults, Community Development Center (BGACDC) has worked relentlessly over decades to build a future for their children in a community that offered few opportunities. The organization strives to help youth and adults develop the qualities needed to become successful citizens and leaders.
Using a self-help community development strategy, BCACDC has addressed the social, educational, housing, health and economic needs of low to moderate income youth and families in the Marvell School District. Today, BGACDC serves as the center of community life in Marvell. Volunteers, supporters, and BGACDC staff work together to achieve goals no one thought possible.
Students from the Marvell-Elaine School District participate daily in the Center's non-school hour activities, affordable housing have been built for area residents, the Center's Best Food in Town (BFT) restaurant offers hot food and job opportunities to the Marvell community and students each year participate in the BGACDC's Saturday and summer programs, gaining valuable youth leadership and academic experience.
Throughout its history, BGACDC has brought new ideas and change to their Delta community and surrounding areas. Programs started by BGACDC have been taken over by local, state, and federal agencies that have the resources to improve and expand BGA programs. These ideas include a health clinic to bring immunization and primary care to children and an underserved population, separate programs to inspire and support girls, boys, and women to reach for and achieve high goals, and decent affordable housing.
As the catalyst for community involvement and activity, BGACDC brings inspirational speakers into town, celebrates holidays, hosts dances, sponsors parade floats, and otherwise plays a central role in the cultural, social and recreational life of the community.
