A Success Story
When Tracy Dunbar was in junior high school, she joined a summer girls’ softball league organized by the Boys, Girls, Adults Community Development Center. It was her first memorable encounter with an organization that would mold her character and her career.
Dr. Dunbar, a nationally respected agricultural economist, returned to Marvell this fall to thank BGACDC for its life-shaping contribution, not only to her but to hundreds of other youngsters who acquired confidence, character and learning through the many activities of the organization.
“I did not realize it then, but I know now that even the experience of that summer of softball set the tone for the rest of my life,” she said. “It kept us occupied in the summer, kept us out of trouble and taught us to be part of a team. It impelled me to join the basketball team in high school, which in turn made me work harder to be successful and to maintain the grades that allowed me to participate in sports.”
“That experience, the mentoring and all the other activities organized by BGACDC helped me and many others like me to build the self-esteem, the professionalism and the personal job skills to lead productive and happy lives.”
Dr. Dunbar is the interim chair of the Department of Agriculture at the University of Agriculture at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. She received a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from the college, a master of science in agricultural economics from Pennsylvania State University and a PhD in resource development from Michigan State University.
